Overview
Our History
The Aiken County Teen Pregnancy Prevention Council (ACTPPC) was formed in 1994 as a 501-c-3 through a community partnership among public institutions and private citizens. Leadership came from a diverse group, including a local man serving on the State Probations and Parole Board who was concerned about the number of inmates he saw who acknowledged fathering children with teen girls, to the Aiken County School District's coordinator of health education.
From 1998-2001, after becoming a United Way organization, we received a special DHEC grant to prevent teen pregnancy and became Aiken County's vendor for the APPI program (Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Initiative) in South Carolina. This initiative focused on building community collaborations and increasing public awareness.
In 2002, DSS took over the APPI grant and it became known as the CAPP or Community Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program. The focus of the grant also changed to providing direct services and implementing best practice curricula with the highest risk populations.
Since then, our dedicated Board of Directors and Staff has worked hard to establish new partnerships with schools, churches and other youth serving organizations to implement research proven interventions such as Positive Outcomes and Real Talk for Youth. Each year, hundreds of youth, parents and other caring adults benefit from our initiatives.
