Overview
New Name Reflects Mission to Empower Aiken's Youth
August 27, 2009 - Aiken Teen Pregnancy Prevention announced today that the non-profit United Way agency's board of directors approved a name change to Aiken Youth Empowerment.
The new name is a more accurate portrayal of the current programs existing for the purpose of empowering youth to make responsible decisions for their futures. The core programs, remaining unchanged, include Real Talk for Youth, Positive Outcomes, Real Care Baby, and Parent Power. These programs have grown over time and encourage strategies that are proven to prevent teen pregnancy, STD's/HIV/AIDS and to promote abstinence, healthy relationships and responsible decisions among youth.
Through implementation of the new name, Aiken Youth Empowerment hopes to eliminate confusion in the community, as they are often confused with other organizations such as the Pregnancy Care Center.
Aiken Youth Empowerment's programs encompass a wider scope and larger aims than just pregnancy prevention; they encourage youth to envision their futures and to work hard to make those visions reality. The new name will assist in expansion of programs, allowing for a comprehensive approach across various youth organizations including schools, churches and others.
The mission of Aiken Youth Empowerment is to educate and increase awareness among youth, their families and other caring adults in order to promote behaviors leading to positive health outcomes.
